Sudden or Unexpected Death in Northern Ireland
Immediate steps after a sudden or unexpected death in Northern Ireland — police involvement, coroner or Procurator Fiscal process, post-mortem, inquest, and funeral arrangements.
- Important: The police or coroner may need to be involved. This is normal procedure and does not mean anything is wrong.
- If not already done, call 999 or 111 immediately. Paramedics or police will attend and guide the initial process.
- Do not move personal effects or disturb the scene. The Coroner or police may need to examine the area — wait for guidance.
- The Coroner will investigate and may order a post-mortem. You cannot register the death until this process is complete.
- Funeral arrangements must wait for the Coroner's release. This can take days to weeks — the Coroner's office will keep you updated.
- Organ donation may still be possible in some circumstances. The hospital or Coroner can advise if tissue donation is an option.
