Sudden or Unexpected Death in Scotland
Immediate steps after a sudden or unexpected death in Scotland — police involvement, coroner or Procurator Fiscal process, post-mortem, inquest, and funeral arrangements.
- Important: The Procurator Fiscal investigates all sudden, suspicious, or unexplained deaths in Scotland. This is standard procedure and does not mean anything is wrong.
- If not already done, call 999 or 111 immediately. Paramedics or police will attend and guide the initial process.
- Do not move personal effects or disturb the scene. The Procurator Fiscal or police may need to examine the area — wait for guidance.
- The Procurator Fiscal will investigate and may order a post-mortem. A Fatal Accident Inquiry may be held instead of an inquest.
- Funeral arrangements must wait for the Procurator Fiscal's release. This can take days to weeks — the Procurator Fiscal's office will keep you updated.
- Organ donation may still be possible in some circumstances. The hospital or Procurator Fiscal can advise if tissue donation is an option.
