Sudden or Unexpected Death in Wales

Immediate steps after a sudden or unexpected death in Wales — police involvement, coroner or Procurator Fiscal process, post-mortem, inquest, and funeral arrangements.

  1. Important: The police or coroner may need to be involved. This is normal procedure and does not mean anything is wrong.
  2. If not already done, call 999 or 111 immediately. Paramedics or police will attend and guide the initial process.
  3. Do not move personal effects or disturb the scene. The Coroner or police may need to examine the area — wait for guidance.
  4. The Coroner will investigate and may order a post-mortem. You cannot register the death until this process is complete.
  5. Funeral arrangements must wait for the Coroner's release. This can take days to weeks — the Coroner's office will keep you updated.
  6. Organ donation may still be possible in some circumstances. The hospital or Coroner can advise if tissue donation is an option.
